Is the blog new the newspaper colum?
Posted on January 3rd, 2008 3 commentsAs a novice blogger and a PR person of some experience I am always interested to hear the views of the big brains in the sector about the impact blogs and other forms of social and digital media is having on public discourse.
The other day I came across an organisation in GB called editorialintelligence.com which is in the business of tracking and measuring the impact of comment on British society.
They have produced a number of videos which you can view on their site including a short but incisive interview with Mick Fealty the founder of Slugger O’Toole and author of the Brassneck blog on the Daily Telegraph online edition.
The video below is another EI short which features Peter York of The Independent, Weber Shandwick’s Colin Byrne and Kim Fletcher in discussion about the ‘commentariat’ (media columnists and commentators) and their influence on politics and public policy.
An interesting piece from a GB perspective. The question is has social and digital media come far enough on this island to realistically compete with the ’hard copy commentators for share of mind and influence over decision makers. O’Conall Street may need to do a little more work on this one.

Probably not, too many piss takers over here, people whom just want to something to give out about and cause a stir instead of offering constructive criticisms. I wonder though with the UK taking heed of media’s such as blogs will it eventually be subject to regulation.
