  • A winter of discontent

The people of Ireland are taking to the streets in protest against the Fianna Fail, PD, Green Party coalition in the Republic. A winter of discontent becons.

Yesterday senior citizens and students in their thousands crammed onto Kildare St to assemble outside the Oireachtas. The Government must be thanking their lucky stars that ICTU and the employers found common ground last month, for had they not the trade union movement would nearly certainly be on the streets too.

If history is anything to go by the electorate will punish FF but more particularly the Greens when they next get the opportunity to do so. From boom to bust increasingly looks like the epitaph of this fragile government.
