  • Ireland’s YES bad for Tories but good news for NI

Posted on October 3rd, 2009 Conall McDevitt 7 comments

Irish Republicans and British Conservatives have suffered a significant setback today as the people of Ireland look set to approve the Lisbon Treaty by are margin of around 65%.  The unlikely NO coalition have had their agenda roundly rejected by the people allowing Ireland to remain at the centre of the European project.

A NO would have strengthened David Cameron and Sinn Fein’s desire to slow the progress of the European Union and would have put Ireland in a dependant relationship with the UK.

The YES vote is good news for the North too as the region remains highly dependant on EU support and is likely to do so for the foreseeable future.

    1. I was discussing this with friends today – one of them said that what will probably happen is that David Cameron as prime minister will find it easier to leave the EU under lisbon and that this may happen

    2. A NO would have … put Ireland in a dependant relationship with the UK.
      With respect, that’s rubbish.

    3. I thought the largest republican party was campaignign for a yes vote, so hardly a significant setback for Irish republicans

I would imagine Fianna Fáil – the Republican party – are quite happy with this result, no?

    5. Paddymac, Coll Ciotach. I was referrring to Sinn Fein of course.

I’m sure Cameron is delighted to know that when he moves to referendum he’ll have the full support of the two largest parties in NI.
